THE following links will assist both the newcomer to Hawai`i politics as well as the veteran. The first thing you will want to know is who your elected representatives indeed are and how to contact them. Always remember, elected officials are particularly sensitive to the words, "I am a constituent and an active voter in your district..."
NOTE: We will be adding all four counties as time and resources permit. Until then, you may identify your Honolulu City Council Member HERE -- along with a meeting calendar and info on how to send in testimony or to testify in person.
For more information on the Honolulu County hearing process, go HERE
Identify your Hawai`i State Senators and Representatives HERE. NOTE: If you use the handy street search tool, enter only the surname of the street; don't enter "Circle, Place, etc." One may also phone the Oahu office of the Lt. Governor at 808-586-0255 for this information.
THE Hawai`i State Legislature, by statute, convenes on "the third Wednesday in January at 10 a.m." and is in session for "60 days" -- not counting several "mandatory" recess days, weekends or holidays. The 2009 legislative calendar (now over) can be viewed HERE
ONCE you have identified an issue of interest, first try and join the em list of the lead organization via our "Issues" page . Remember, many of these groups are all volunteer organizations. Some will begin to send you "heads up" notifications on important legislation; some will not. Tracking legislation can be very tedious, often with 24-hrs notice re hearings and you may want to "track" the progress of a particular bill yourself. There are several ways you can easily do this:
When the legislature is in session, one may sign up to receive "Hearing Notices By Email" HERE
3) ALSO check out RSS FEEDS -- a simple program which automatically sends you new information on your chosen area(s) of interest.
SOME of these legislative & related search pages may at first seem a little daunting, but play around with them a bit and you'll quickly master the subtleties.
THE all-important hearing notice announcing the date, time, location and other important details of your bill are by statute supposed to come out 24-hours in advance, but notices can come at any time of the day or night. While your best bet is to sign up for em hearing notices above, one may also search for current hearing notices HERE
HAWAI`I residents are indeed fortunate to have our Public Access Room on the 4th floor of the State Capitol. There you will find friendly, helpful folks who are more than happy to assist you with your questions and generally be a "home away from home" when you are in the building. If they can't answer a question, they will most often try hard to get one for you. Read more about the PAA services and contact information HERE
The National Priorities Project provides the user with an interface to the latest US Census data to calculate the direct local impact of President Bush's $56.5 billion tax cuts for the nation's 1% weathiest, and the Iraq war on a specific community's affordable housing, education, health, etc. programs.

Reading, reflection and time have convinced me that the interests of society require the observation of those moral precepts only in which all religions agree (for all forbid us to murder, steal, plunder, or bear false witness), and that we should not intermeddle with the particular dogmas in which all religions differ, and which are totally unconnected with morality. -- Thomas Jefferson
